War of words over firing of governor’s brother
A spat between Panama’s Mayor Mayer Mizrachi and the governor of the province of Panama, Mayín Correa, over the firing of her 84-year-old brother has gone public, with Mizrachi, stating that the criticism he receives from Corea is due to his failure to reinstate her brother.
Mizrachi, on social media, indicated that he has remained silent in the face of the animosity of Correa, who at one time was mayor of the capital district.
“On November 6, 2025, she sent me a note, while I was Governor and her superior, requesting the reinstatement of her brother, whom she had hired when she was mayor (along with her sister). The reason was very simple: the 84-year-old man had not been coming to work since the pandemic, he was ignoring his superior, and he was collecting his $1,500 plus subsidies and pensions,” Mizrachi stated.
The mayor argued that thousands have been removed from the organization , and that with so many young people seeking employment opportunities, “this is disrespectful.”
Correa was mayor of Panama between 1991 and 1999. term she was appointed by the then president Guillermo and, in the second, from 1994 to 1999, by popular election.
On numerous occasions, Correa has criticized Mayor Mizrachi on several issues, including the creation of the Municipal Police.
Correa said that her brother was accused of “abandonment of post” for being absent for five consecutive days, when in reality he was at home waiting to be assigned duties and work adjustments Sheargued that the dismissal violates the Equal Opportunities Act (art. 8), the Internal Regulations of the Mayor’s Office of Panama (art. 131) and Law No. 25 of July 10, 2007 (Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities).
